Key Topics to Revise

1

Working of a Computer - The Four Basic Functions

  • A computer performs four basic functions: Input, Processing, Storage, and Output.
  • Input: Accepting data/information from the user through input devices like keyboard, mouse, scanner.
  • Processing: Performing arithmetic or logical operations on data using the CPU.
2

Input Devices

  • An input device is used to get data or instructions from the user and pass it to the CPU for processing.
  • Keyboard: Standard QWERTY keyboard with 104 keys — most common input device.
  • Mouse: Pointing device that controls cursor movement — called an electro-mechanical device.
3

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

  • CPU is called the 'Brain of the Computer' because it processes all instructions given to the computer.
  • In a microcomputer, the CPU is based on a single chip called the microprocessor.
  • CPU has three main components: Control Unit (CU), Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), and Memory Registers.
4

Output Devices

  • Output devices receive information from the CPU and present it to the user in desired form.
  • Monitor (Visual Display Unit/VDU): Displays data and information. Standard size: 24 lines × 80 characters. Output on monitor is called SOFT COPY.
  • CRT Monitor: Cathode Ray Tube — older, bulkier, consumes more electricity — rarely used today.
