5.1 Fundamentals of Data Communication

  • Data communication refers to transmission of digital data between two or more computers through a network
  • Basic elements: Transmitter (converts information into suitable form), Channel (physical medium for transmission), Receiver (receives transmitted information)

  • Different frequencies suit different communication purposes - not all frequencies are suitable for human communication
  • Bandwidth: Range of frequencies that make up a signal

  • Transmission media are physical or wireless pathways through which data travels
  • Guided media: Provide physical path between transmitter and receiver
  • Unguided media: Use wireless transmission through air, vacuum, or water

  • Computer Network: Group of interconnected computers sharing resources and information
  • Network Devices: Hardware components enabling communication (rodem, router, switch, hub, gateway, bridge)
  • Modem: Converts digital data to analog and analog to digital for internet connectivity
