Introduction to Vedic Ecology and the Need for a Paradigm Shift
- The world today faces severe ecological crises caused by rampant resource extraction and changes in land use driven by global materialist culture.
- There is a growing acknowledgement of the need for a paradigm shift — a fundamental change in attitudes, values, and beliefs towards the environment.
- India's Vedic heritage offers a powerful alternative worldview that sees divinity in nature and treats it with deep respect.
5.1 – Yajur Veda: The Shantipath (Prayer for Universal Peace)
- The Shantipath is a verse from Yajur Veda (36/17) in which Vedic seers pray for peace everywhere — in the outside world and within each human soul.
- The prayer seeks peace in the heavens, skies, earth, waters, herbs, trees, divine beings, the Great Lord, and all existence.
- The translation quoted in the chapter is by Dr Tulsi Ram.
5.2 – Rig Veda: Divinity of Nature, Forests, Rivers, and Agni
- Vedic cosmology is based on the Panchamahabhuta — five fundamental elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether (Akash). These constitute all matter, including the human body.
- In Vedic thought, nature is divine — an inseparable life force uniting humans, animals, and plants.
- Cosmic forces are venerated as Gods: Indra (chief), Agni, Soma, Varuna, Bhaga, Vishnu, Surya, Savitr, Aditya, Ushas (dawn), Pushan (agriculture), Dyauspitr (sky/father), Prithvi (Mother Earth), Vayu (
5.3 – Atharva Veda: The Prithivi Sukta (Hymn to Mother Earth)
- The Prithivi Sukta is a hymn of 63 verses in the Atharvaveda, dedicated entirely to the glory of Mother Earth.
- These verses enjoin all human beings to protect, preserve, and care for the environment.
- The Earth's gifts — firmness, purity, and fertility — belong to everyone without discrimination. They are not the exclusive property of any country or person (egalitarian principle).
