Key Topics to Revise
Origin and History of Geometry
- The word 'geometry' comes from two Greek words: 'geo' meaning 'earth' and 'metrein' meaning 'to measure'.
- Geometry originated from the practical need to measure land, especially in ancient Egypt where the river Nile would flood and wipe out field boundaries.
- The Indus Valley Civilisation (about 3000 BCE) used geometry extensively — roads were parallel, houses had well-planned rooms, and bricks had a fixed ratio of length:breadth:thickness = 4:2:1.
Euclid's Definitions
- Euclid listed 23 definitions in Book 1 of 'Elements' to describe basic geometric concepts.
- Key definitions: A point is that which has no part. A line is breadthless length. A straight line lies evenly with the points on itself. A surface has length and breadth only. A plane surface lies eve
- From solids to points: Solid (3D) → Surface (2D) → Line (1D) → Point (0D). Each step loses one dimension.
Euclid's Axioms (Common Notions)
- Axioms are basic assumptions that are obvious universal truths — they are accepted without proof.
- Axioms are used throughout mathematics, not just geometry.
- Euclid stated 7 common notions (axioms).
Euclid's Five Postulates
- Postulates are assumptions specific to geometry. Like axioms, they are accepted without proof.
- Postulate 1: A straight line may be drawn from any one point to any other point. (Note: it says AT LEAST one line, but Euclid assumed a UNIQUE line in practice)
- Postulate 2: A terminated line (line segment) can be produced indefinitely on both sides to form a full line.
