  • Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants containing chlorophyll build complex organic molecules from simple inorganic substances using sunlight.

2. Experiments and Scientific Discoveries in Photosynthesis

  • Joseph Priestley lived from 1733 to 1804 and performed his key experiments in 1770.
  • Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774.
  • Lavoisier coined the name oxygen in 1775.

3. Chloroplast Structure and Light Energy Capture

  • Chloroplasts are present in large numbers, around 40 to 100 per cell, in stomatal guard cells and ground tissue of green plant parts.
  • The chloroplast is a membranous structure consisting of 3 membranes.
  • The inner most layer forms stacked sac-like structures called grana.

  • Light reaction is the photochemical phase of photosynthesis.
  • It takes place in the grana of chloroplasts.
  • Chlorophyll absorbs photons and becomes activated.
