Introduction to Excretion
- Excretion is derived from Latin words 'ex' meaning 'out' and 'crenere' meaning 'shift'
- All living organisms produce waste during metabolic activities (anabolic and catabolic)
- Waste products include carbon dioxide, water, nitrogenous compounds (ammonia, urea, uric acid), bile pigments, excess salts
Human Excretory System
- Main excretory system consists of: pair of kidneys, pair of ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
- Kidneys are bean-shaped, reddish-brown organs located in abdominal cavity on either side of backbone
- Right kidney positioned slightly lower than left kidney due to liver occupying space
Internal Structure of Kidney and Nephron
- Kidney has two distinct regions: cortex (dark brown outer zone) and medulla (pale inner zone)
- Each kidney contains 1.3 to 1.8 million nephrons (functional units)
- Nephron structure: Malpighian body (Bowman's capsule + glomerulus) and renal tubule
Mechanism of Urine Formation
- Four stages: 1) Glomerular filtration, 2) Tubular reabsorption, 3) Tubular secretion, 4) Formation of concentrated urine
- Glomerular filtration: Blood filtered under high pressure in glomerulus, produces 'primary urine'
- Tubular reabsorption: Peritubular capillaries reabsorb essential substances and excess water from primary urine
