Key Topics to Revise

1

4.2 Similarity of Triangles

  • Two figures are similar if they have the same shape but not necessarily the same size
  • Similar triangles have proportional corresponding sides and equal corresponding angles
  • Similarity is denoted by the symbol ~
2

4.3 Thales Theorem and Angle Bisector Theorem

  • Basic Proportionality Theorem (BPT) or Thales Theorem: A line parallel to one side of a triangle divides the other two sides proportionally
  • Converse of BPT: If a line divides two sides of a triangle in the same ratio, then it is parallel to the third side
  • If DE || BC in △ABC, then AD/DB = AE/EC
3

4.4 Pythagoras Theorem

  • Pythagoras Theorem: In a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of squares of the other two sides
  • Formula: c² = a² + b², where c is hypotenuse and a, b are the other two sides
  • The hypotenuse is always the longest side of a right triangle (opposite the 90° angle)
4

4.5 Circles and Tangents

  • A tangent to a circle is a line that touches the circle at exactly one point
  • The radius to a point of tangency is perpendicular to the tangent at that point
  • From an interior point of a circle, no tangent can be drawn
