1. Basic Concepts of Sets

  • A set is a well-defined collection of objects. 'Well-defined' means we can clearly decide whether any object belongs to the collection or not.
  • Objects in a set are called members or elements.
  • Sets are denoted by capital letters: A, B, P, Q, X, Y, etc.

2. Representation of Sets

  • There are THREE ways to represent a set: Descriptive Form, Set Builder Form, and Roster (Tabular) Form.
  • DESCRIPTIVE FORM: Describe the set in words. Example: 'The set of all vowels in English alphabets.'
  • SET BUILDER FORM: All elements are described by a rule. Example: A = {x : x is a vowel in English alphabets} or A = {x | x is a vowel in English alphabets}. The symbol ':' or '|' means 'such that'.

3. Types of Sets

  • EMPTY SET (Null Set / Void Set): A set with NO elements. Denoted by ∅ or {}. Example: Set of odd numbers divisible by 2 = ∅.
  • SINGLETON SET: A set with exactly ONE element. Example: {x : x is an even prime number} = {2}.
  • FINITE SET: A set with a countable, limited number of elements. Example: Set of days in a week = {Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun}.

4. Set Operations

  • COMPLEMENT A' (or Aᶜ): All elements in Universal set U that are NOT in A. A' = {x : x ∈ U, x ∉ A}.
  • Key complement properties: (A')' = A; U' = ∅; ∅' = U.
  • UNION A ∪ B: Set of all elements in A OR B OR BOTH. A ∪ B = {x : x ∈ A or x ∈ B}.
