What to Focus On

  • Exponents of the variable in a polynomial must be whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, …).
  • The degree is the highest power of the variable with a non-zero coefficient.
  • A monomial has 1 term; binomial has 2 terms; trinomial has 3 terms.

  • Zero of p(x) is a value 'a' such that p(a) = 0.
  • Zero of ax + b is x = –b/a.
  • A linear polynomial has exactly one zero.

  • When p(x) is divided by (x – a), the remainder = p(a). No actual division needed!
  • If dividing by (x + a), substitute x = –a.
  • If dividing by (ax – b), substitute x = b/a.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any algebraic expression with a variable is a polynomial.

The zero of a polynomial and the value of the polynomial being zero are completely different things — students confuse p(0) with 'zero of p(x)'.

The degree of the zero polynomial (the constant 0) is 0.

Memory Tips

Definition of a Polynomial — only whole number exponents allowed

Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial — classification by number of terms

Degree of a Polynomial — highest exponent of the variable

Linear, Quadratic, Cubic — degree 1, 2, 3
