Colleges you can reach after JEE Main: NITs, IIITs and GFTIs via JoSAA, Delhi's JAC colleges, state colleges and private universities, and how each admits.
JEE Main opens doors to the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA (138 JoSAA institutes in 2026, including the IITs and IISc, which use JEE Advanced), plus Delhi's JAC colleges, state colleges and private universities. You don't need JEE Advanced for excellent options. This guide covers each route and how admission works.
Category 1: NITs (Through JoSAA)
There are 31 NITs, and IIEST Shibpur is allotted alongside them. The top five by closing rank for B.Tech CSE in JoSAA 2025 (final round, Other-State quota, Open, gender-neutral) were:

Category 2: IIITs (Through JoSAA)
JoSAA covered 26 IIITs in 2026 — for example IIIT Allahabad, IIITM Gwalior, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIIT Lucknow and IIIT Sri City. Many are CS- and IT-focused. Closing ranks vary widely, so check the official data for each.
Note: IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi and IIIT Bangalore are not in JoSAA — they run their own admissions (IIIT Delhi admits through JAC Delhi). Check their admission pages separately.
Category 3: GFTIs (Through JoSAA)
JoSAA covered 56 other Government Funded Technical Institutes in 2026. Well-regarded ones include Punjab Engineering College (Chandigarh), BIT Mesra and the Schools of Planning and Architecture (for B.Arch/B.Planning through JEE Main Paper 2). Quality varies, so compare NIRF rankings and placement reports.

State colleges tip: If you are from Delhi, DTU and NSUT through JAC Delhi are strong options with your JEE Main rank. In other states, check whether your state counselling accepts JEE Main ranks as well as its own exam.

Apply to a few backup exams even if your JEE Main score is good. Registration fees are small compared with the cost of losing a year.

Which colleges accept JEE Main score directly?
Through JoSAA, the NITs (plus IIEST Shibpur), IIITs and other GFTIs admit on JEE Main rank — in 2026 JoSAA covered 138 institutes, of which the 23 IITs and IISc use JEE Advanced rank instead. Outside JoSAA, Delhi's DTU, NSUT and IIIT Delhi admit through JAC Delhi using JEE Main, several state counselling systems use JEE Main ranks, and some private universities such as Thapar also accept JEE Main.
Can I get a good college with JEE Main score without JEE Advanced?
Yes. NITs, IIITs and good GFTIs offer strong engineering programmes and placements, and you don't need JEE Advanced for any of them. Many students pick CSE at a good NIT over a less popular branch at an IIT. Compare branch-wise placement data in each institute's NIRF submission before deciding.
What are the best private colleges for engineering?
Well-known private options include BITS Pilani (BITSAT), VIT Vellore (VITEEE), SRM (SRMJEEE), Manipal Institute of Technology (MET) and Thapar Institute (JEE Main). Rankings and placements differ a lot by campus and branch, so check NIRF rankings and each institute's own placement reports.
Should I join a private college or take a drop year?
Join a private college if you got a strong institute and branch, or your family can afford it and you don't want to lose a year. Take a drop if you missed your target by a small margin, have a clear improvement plan, and are still within your JEE Main and JEE Advanced attempt limits. Be honest about what will change in the extra year.
What about state-level engineering colleges?
State colleges are often underrated. Well-known ones include COEP Pune, Jadavpur University, Anna University (CEG), DTU and NSUT Delhi, RVCE and BMSCE Bangalore, and PSG Tech Coimbatore. Each admits through its own state or regional process (for example MHT-CET, WBJEE, TNEA, KCET/COMEDK or JAC Delhi with JEE Main). Research your state's options carefully.
How to choose between college and branch?
For IT/software careers, branch usually matters more; for core engineering, the institute's reputation and recruiter base matter more; for higher studies abroad, your CGPA and research matter most. If two options are close, pick the one with better placements in your target industry — look at median salaries and the number placed, not just the highest package.
