- Indo-Islamic architecture means architectural forms that show a mix of styles.
- Large-scale Islamic building activity in India began only in the early thirteenth century under the Delhi Sultanate.
- Arcuate construction using voussoirs and keystones was introduced gradually, allowing arches to support domes.
Decorative forms and construction materials
- Hindus adorned all surfaces with sculptures and paintings.
- Muslims, forbidden to replicate living forms on any surface, developed religious art and architecture consisting of arabesque, geometrical patterns, and calligraphy on plaster and stone.
- The lotus bud fringe motif was used in the inner curves of arches.
Forts and minars
- Building monumental forts with embattlements was a regular feature in medieval times and symbolised the seat of power of a king.
- When a fort was captured, the vanquished ruler lost complete power or sovereignty and accepted the suzerainty of the victor.
- Some important forts are Chittorgarh, Gwalior, Daulatabad, and Golconda.
Tombs and sarais
- Monumental structures over graves of rulers and royalty were a popular feature of medieval India.
- Well-known tomb examples include Ghyasuddin Tughlaq, Humayun, Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan in Delhi, and Akbar and Itmaduddaula in Agra.
- According to Anthony Welch, the idea behind the tomb was eternal paradise as a reward for the true believer on the Day of Judgement.
