1. Mending and Laundry

  • Mending means repairing damage such as cuts, tears, holes, open seams, missing buttons, fasteners, ribbons, laces, and fancy attachments.
  • Mending must be done before laundering because washing strain can cause greater fabric loss.
  • Laundry includes stain removal, preparation of fabrics for washing, washing, finishing by blueing and starching, and pressing or ironing.

2. Stains and Dirt

  • A stain is an unwanted mark or colouration caused by contact and absorption of foreign matter and cannot be removed by normal washing.
  • Stains are classified into vegetable, animal, oil, mineral, and dye-bleeding stains.
  • Vegetable stains such as tea, coffee, fruits, and vegetables are acidic in nature and are removed by alkaline medium.

3. Stain Removal Reagents

  • Grease solvents include turpentine, kerosene, white petrol, methylated spirit, acetone, and carbon tetrachloride.
  • Grease absorbents include bran, Fuller's earth, talcum powder, starch, and French chalk.
  • Soaps and detergents act as emulsifiers.

4. Cleaning Action and Washing Methods

  • Water is the most valuable agent used for laundry work.
  • Water penetrates fabric during steeping and helps remove non-greasy dirt.
  • Temperature increases the penetrating power of water and helps with greasy dirt.
