1. Introduction to Computer System
- A computer is an electronic device that can be programmed to accept data, process it, and generate output.
- A computer along with additional hardware and software is called a computer system.
- A computer system primarily comprises CPU, memory, input/output devices, and storage devices.
2. Central Processing Unit
- CPU is the electronic circuitry that carries out actual processing and is called the brain of the computer.
- CPU is also popularly known as processor or microprocessor.
- Physically, the CPU is placed on one or more microchips called integrated circuits.
3. Input and Output Devices
- Input devices send control signals and convert input data into a digital form acceptable by the computer.
- Examples of input devices include keyboard, mouse, scanner, and touch screen.
- Specially designed braille keyboards help visually impaired users enter data.
4. Evolution of Computer
- ENIAC is the first binary programmable computer based on Von Neumann architecture.
- Von Neumann architecture consists of CPU, memory, input/output devices, and communication channels.
- Punched card was an early digital data storage medium.
