  • Data is a collection of characters, numbers, and other symbols that represents values of some situations or variables.
  • Data is plural; the singular form is datum.
  • People use data to make decisions in daily life, business, government planning, banking, sports analysis, and many other fields.

  • Data can broadly be classified into two categories based on format: structured and unstructured.
  • Structured data is usually stored in tabular form with rows and columns.
  • In structured data, each column represents an attribute, characteristic, or variable, and each row represents one observation.

3. Data Collection and Data Processing

  • Data collection means identifying already available data or collecting it from appropriate sources.
  • Data may already be stored in a register, a digital file, or may need to be collected for a new system.
  • Data can be stored in a CSV file or in a database management system.

4. Measures of Central Tendency

  • The three common measures of central tendency are mean, median, and mode.
  • These measures help describe a typical or central value of the data.
  • Mean gives the average of numeric values.
