2. DBMS, Database Schema, Instance, and Meta-data

  • DBMS is software used to create and manage databases.
  • DBMS serves as an interface between users or application programs and the database.
  • Retrieving data through special commands is called querying the database.

3. Relational Data Model and Relation Properties

  • The relational data model is the most commonly used data model.
  • Other data models include object-oriented, entity-relationship, document, and hierarchical models.
  • In the relational model, tables are called relations.

4. Keys in a Relational Database

  • Keys are used to uniquely identify tuples and create relationships between relations.
  • Candidate key is any attribute that can uniquely identify tuples in a relation.
  • GUID and GPhone are candidate keys of GUARDIAN because both take unique values.
