Nature of Motivation
- Motivation explains what moves behaviour.
- The term motivation is derived from the Latin word 'movere', meaning movement of activity.
- Instincts, drives, needs, goals, and incentives come under the broad cluster of motivation.
Types of Motives
- There are two broad types of motives: biological and psychosocial.
- Biological motives are also known as physiological motives and are guided mostly by physiological mechanisms of the body.
- Psychosocial motives are primarily learned from an individual's interactions with environmental factors.
Biological Motives
- The biological approach is the earliest attempt to explain motivation.
- Food intake is regulated by a complex feeding-satiety system located in the hypothalamus, liver, and other body parts, along with external cues.
- Hunger is influenced by stomach contractions, low glucose in blood, low protein, fat stores, and cues such as smell, taste, and appearance of food.
Psychosocial Motives
- Psychosocial motives are learned through family, neighbourhood, friends, relatives, and other social interactions.
- Need for affiliation means seeking other human beings and wanting to be close to them both physically and psychologically.
- Affiliation involves motivation for social contact.
