  • There are two broad types of motives: biological and psychosocial.
  • Biological motives are also known as physiological motives and are guided mostly by physiological mechanisms of the body.

Biological Motives

  • The biological approach is the earliest attempt to explain motivation.
  • Food intake is regulated by a complex feeding-satiety system located in the hypothalamus, liver, and other body parts, along with external cues.
  • Hunger is influenced by stomach contractions, low glucose in blood, low protein, fat stores, and cues such as smell, taste, and appearance of food.

Psychosocial Motives

  • Psychosocial motives are learned through family, neighbourhood, friends, relatives, and other social interactions.
  • Need for affiliation means seeking other human beings and wanting to be close to them both physically and psychologically.
  • Affiliation involves motivation for social contact.
