When subtracting large numbers, digits can be taken away in any order because the final answer depends only on the numbers, not on place value.

In addition word problems, all amounts should always be added together, even when one part is money received or a starting amount.

The equal sign means the answer is always on the right side only, so one side of an equation should be read first and the other side later.
