Overview

Lines on a plane can meet, stay apart forever, or meet in special ways. When two lines meet, they form four angles. When a third line cuts two lines, it is called a transversal and it creates angle patterns that help identify whether the two lines are parallel. These ideas are important because they

Key Concepts

A pair of lines that meet

A pair of lines that meet each other at a point on a plane surface is called intersecting lines. Four angles are formed at the point of intersection.

Adjacent angles formed by two intersecting

Adjacent angles formed by two intersecting lines are called a linear pair. A linear pair always adds up to a straight angle.

Opposite angles formed by two intersecting

Opposite angles formed by two intersecting lines are called vertically opposite angles. They are always equal to each other.

If two lines intersect and all

If two lines intersect and all four angles are equal, then each angle is a right angle. Such lines are perpendicular lines.

Parallel lines lie on the same

Parallel lines lie on the same plane and do not meet however far they are extended at both ends.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines
  • Understand linear pairs and vertically opposite angles
  • Use angle relationships formed by a transversal
  • Recognize corresponding angles, alternate angles, and co-interior angles
  • Use corresponding angles to test whether two lines are parallel
