Topics in Parallel and Intersecting Lines

1

1. Intersecting Lines and Their Angles

  • When two lines intersect, four angles are formed at the point of intersection.
  • Adjacent angles formed by two intersecting lines make a linear pair.
  • A linear pair always adds up to a straight angle.
2

2. Parallel Lines

  • Parallel lines lie on the same plane and do not meet however far they are extended at both ends.
  • Lines that never meet are not automatically parallel if they are not in the same plane.
  • Opposite edges of a sheet of paper are a simple example of parallel lines.
3

3. Transversal and Angle Relationships

  • A transversal is a line that intersects two different lines.
  • When a transversal cuts two lines, eight angles are formed.
  • These eight angles can have at most four distinct measures.
4

4. Drawing and Recognising Line Relationships

  • A ruler and set square can be used to draw perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • Sliding a set square along a base line helps draw a new line at the same angle, making parallel lines.
  • Perpendicular lines make right angles.
