What to Focus On

  • Multiply numerators together and denominators together.
  • A whole number can be written as a fraction with denominator 1.
  • Fraction multiplication is commutative: changing the order does not change the product.

  • A fraction stays unchanged when numerator and denominator are divided by the same common factor.
  • Cancelling common factors before multiplying makes the work simpler.
  • Always cancel only common factors, not unrelated numbers.

  • If both numbers are greater than 1, the product is greater than both.
  • If both numbers are between 0 and 1, the product is less than both.
  • If one number is between 0 and 1 and the other is greater than 1, the product lies between them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When multiplying fractions, the denominators should be added instead of multiplied.

When multiplying a fraction by a whole number, only the denominator changes.

In fraction multiplication, common factors should be cancelled only after multiplying first.

Memory Tips

Multiplying fractions: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator

Dividing fractions using the reciprocal of the divisor

Reciprocal of a fraction

Cancelling common factors before multiplying fractions
