1. Multiplication of Fractions

  • A fraction multiplied by a whole number means repeated parts of the same size.
  • A whole number can be written as a fraction with denominator 1.
  • When multiplying a fraction by a whole number, first divide the whole number by the denominator of the fraction, then multiply by the numerator.

2. Product and Number Size

  • The size of a product depends on the kind of numbers being multiplied.
  • If both numbers are greater than 1, the product is greater than both numbers.
  • If both numbers are between 0 and 1, the product is less than both numbers.

3. Division of Fractions

  • Division of fractions is done by multiplying by the reciprocal of the divisor.
  • The reciprocal of a fraction is formed by interchanging the numerator and denominator.
  • A fraction multiplied by its reciprocal gives 1.

4. Lowest Terms and Cancelling Factors

  • A fraction remains the same when its numerator and denominator are divided by the same common factor.
  • Reducing a fraction to lowest terms is called apavartana.
  • Common factors may be cancelled before multiplication.
