Percent means per centum, which means by the hundred or out of hundred. So 25% means 25 out of 100. Percentages are fractions with denominator 100.

A fraction can be changed into

A fraction can be changed into a percentage by multiplying it by 100. For example, 3/4 = 75%.

The rule is y% of value

The rule is y% of value = (y/100) × value. For example, 50% of a value means half of it, because 50% = 1/2 = 0.5.

Scores or quantities with different total values cannot be compared directly. They must first be converted into percentages. For example, 42/50 = 84%
