The sum of the numbers in a 2x2 calendar grid is 52. What is the top-left number?
Show answer
9
For a 2x2 calendar grid, the sum is 4a + 16. Set 4a + 16 = 52. Then 4a = 36, so a = 9. The top-left number is 9.
In a number pyramid, the top is 90 and the bottom row is 14, c, and 10, with the middle row values a and b. Find c, a, and b.
Show answer
c = 33, a = 47, b = 43
In a number pyramid, each number is the sum of the two numbers below it. So a = 14 + c, b = c + 10, and a + b = 90. Substitute: (14 + c) + (c + 10) = 90. That gives 24 + 2c = 90, so 2c = 66 and c = 33. Then a = 14 + 33 = 47 and b = 33 + 10 = 43.
For the number pyramid with top 60 and bottom row 12, c, 8, what are the values of c, a, and b?
Show answer
c = 20, a = 32, b = 28
The pyramid rules give a = 12 + c, b = c + 8, and a + b = 60. So (12 + c) + (c + 8) = 60. This becomes 20 + 2c = 60. Then 2c = 40, so c = 20. After that, a = 12 + 20 = 32 and b = 20 + 8 = 28.
A 2-digit number is written as ab. If the number is reversed to ba and b > a, what is the difference between the reversed number and the original number?
Show answer
9(b - a)
The original number is 10a + b and the reversed number is 10b + a. Their difference is (10b + a) - (10a + b) = 9b - 9a = 9(b - a). So it is always divisible by 9.
