What to Focus On

  • Consecutive numbers are numbers written in order without gaps.
  • A number may have one or more representations as a sum of consecutive numbers.
  • Odd numbers can be written as the sum of two consecutive numbers.

  • Parity means even or odd.
  • All expressions of the form a ± b ± c ± d have the same parity.
  • Changing one sign changes the value by an even number.

  • A multiple of 4 plus a multiple of 4 is a multiple of 4.
  • Two even numbers that are not multiples of 4 also add to a multiple of 4.
  • Numbers of the form 4p + 2 are even but not multiples of 4.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

All expressions of the form a ± b ± c ± d can have different parities depending on the signs chosen.

If a number is divisible by 9, then every number divisible by 3 must also be divisible by 9.

For divisibility by 11, the digits should be added in the reverse order of the place-value pattern, or the short and excess sums can be subtracted in either order.

Memory Tips

All expressions formed from four numbers using plus and minus signs have the same parity

Switching one sign in a four-number expression changes the value by an even number

Odd plus odd, even plus even, odd minus odd, and even minus even all give even; odd plus even gives odd

Sum of two multiples of 4 is always a multiple of 4
