What to Focus On

  • Area is measured by counting unit squares.
  • Area of a rectangle = length × width.
  • A 7 cm × 4 cm rectangle has area 28 cm².
  • Perimeter is NOT a valid measure of area.
  • Same perimeter does not mean same area.
  • A larger perimeter can still go with a smaller area.
  • Area of a triangle = 1/2 × base × height.
  • The formula works for all triangles.
  • A triangle can be compared with a rectangle to find its area.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Perimeter can be used to measure area.

A larger perimeter always means a larger area.

Equal-area triangles from a rectangle diagonal are also congruent.

Memory Tips

Area of a rectangle

A 7 cm by 4 cm rectangle has more area than an 8 cm by 3 cm rectangle
