Sums of Consecutive Numbers

  • A natural number can sometimes be written as a sum of consecutive numbers in more than one way.
  • Examples include 7 = 3 + 4, 10 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, 12 = 3 + 4 + 5, and 15 = 7 + 8 = 4 + 5 + 6 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5.
  • Odd numbers can be written as a sum of two consecutive numbers.

Parity in Expressions with Plus and Minus

  • All expressions formed from four numbers using + and - signs have the same parity.
  • If one sign is switched, the value changes by an even number.
  • This means all the expressions a ± b ± c ± d have the same parity.

When Two Even Numbers Give a Multiple of 4

  • Adding two multiples of 4 always gives a multiple of 4.
  • Adding two even numbers that are not multiples of 4 also gives a multiple of 4.
  • The two important forms are 4p and 4q, and (4p + 2) and (4q + 2).

Divisibility by 10, 9, 3, and 11

  • A number is divisible by 10 if and only if its units digit is 0.
  • Every place value except the units place is a multiple of 10.
  • A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
