Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Algebraic expressions and one-variable polynomials

  • An algebraic expression may contain numbers, variables, and operation symbols.
  • In 4x + 5y + 3, 4x, 5y, and 3 are terms.
  • In 4x + 5y + 3, x and y are variables, 4 and 5 are coefficients, and 3 is a constant.
2

2. Linear polynomials, linear equations, and input-output form

  • Polynomials of degree 1 are called linear polynomials.
  • When a linear polynomial in one variable is equated to a constant, a linear equation is formed.
  • A polynomial can be thought of as an input-output process, that is, a function.
3

3. Linear patterns in sequences and word problems

  • The sequence 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 has constant difference 2.
  • The number of square tiles at Stage n is 2n - 1.
  • 2n - 1 is a linear polynomial of degree 1.
4

4. Linear growth and linear decay

  • Linear growth means a quantity increases by a constant amount over equal intervals.
  • Linear decay means a quantity decreases by a constant amount over equal intervals.
  • In Example 9, the journey cost function is C(d) = 100 + 60d.
