Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Sequences and Terms

  • A sequence is an ordered list of numbers where each number is a term.
  • Sequences may be finite or infinite.
  • Natural numbers, odd numbers, triangular numbers, and square numbers are common sequences.
2

2. Explicit Rules

  • An explicit formula uses the term's position number n to calculate its value.
  • The odd number sequence has explicit rule u_n = 2n - 1.
  • For u_n = 2n - 1, the 137th term is found by solving 2n - 1 = 137, giving n = 69.
3

3. Recursive Rules

  • A recursive rule describes a sequence by linking each term to previous term(s).
  • The earlier terms must be known before the next term can be found.
  • For an AP, the recursive rule is t1 = a, tn = tn-1 + d for n ≥ 2.
4

4. Arithmetic Progressions

  • Such sequences, in which the difference between consecutive terms is constant, are known as arithmetic progressions.
  • An AP has a fixed common difference d.
  • The general form of an AP is a, a + d, a + 2d, ..., a + (n - 1) × d.
