Key Topics to Revise
1
Understanding Area
- Area is the amount of surface covered by a shape.
- We measure area by counting the number of unit squares (squares of side 1 cm) that fit inside the shape.
- The unit of area is 'square cm' (written as sq cm).
2
Understanding Perimeter
- Perimeter is the total length of the boundary (outer edge) of a shape.
- To find perimeter, add up all the sides of the shape.
- Perimeter is measured in cm (or mm, m, km for larger shapes).
3
Rectangles with Same Area but Different Perimeters
- Using 12 unit squares, you can make different rectangles: 1×12, 2×6, 3×4.
- All these rectangles have the same area = 12 square cm.
- But their perimeters are different: 1×12 has perimeter 26 cm, 2×6 has 16 cm, 3×4 has 14 cm.
4
Area of Triangles
- A triangle that is exactly half of a rectangle has area = half the area of the rectangle.
- If a rectangle has area 2 sq cm, the triangle formed by cutting it diagonally = 1 sq cm.
- If a rectangle has area 20 sq cm, the triangle = 10 sq cm.
