Key Topics to Revise

1

Shapes: Open and Closed

  • A closed shape is one where all sides are connected and there are no openings.
  • An open shape is one where the sides are not fully connected – it has at least one opening.
  • When we make a shape with matchsticks, we can form many different closed shapes using the same number of matchsticks.
2

Angles: What Are They?

  • An angle is formed when two straight lines meet at a point (corner).
  • The amount of opening between two lines is the angle – bigger opening means bigger angle.
  • When we change the angle between two matchsticks (or sides), the whole shape changes.
3

Types of Angles: Right Angle, Less Than Right Angle, More Than Right Angle

  • A RIGHT ANGLE looks like the corner of a square, the letter L, or the corner of a book. It measures exactly 90°.
  • We use the symbol ∟ or a small square at the corner to show a right angle.
  • An angle LESS THAN a right angle is a smaller, sharper, more pointed angle. It measures less than 90°. This is also called an ACUTE angle.
4

Measuring Angles: The Degree Clock and Protractor

  • Angles are measured in DEGREES. The symbol for degree is °.
  • A right angle = 90°
  • Half of a right angle = 45°
