Key Topics to Revise

1

Understanding Fractions – The Basics

  • A fraction has two parts: the top number is called the NUMERATOR and the bottom number is called the DENOMINATOR.
  • The denominator tells us into how many EQUAL parts the whole is divided.
  • The numerator tells us how many of those equal parts we are talking about.
2

Fractions of a Number or Group

  • To find a fraction of a number, DIVIDE the number by the denominator first, then MULTIPLY by the numerator.
  • Example: 1/4 of 12 chocolates = 12 ÷ 4 = 3 chocolates.
  • Example: 2/3 of 12 = (12 ÷ 3) × 2 = 4 × 2 = 8.
3

Equivalent Fractions

  • Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the SAME amount.
  • Example from Cutting the Halwa: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 = 3/6 = 5/10. All these show the same quantity – half of the whole.
  • From the coloured circles activity: 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8.
4

Comparing Fractions

  • When denominators are the SAME: the fraction with the bigger numerator is larger. Example: 3/8 > 2/8.
  • When numerators are the SAME: the fraction with the SMALLER denominator is larger. Example: 1/3 > 1/4 because thirds are bigger pieces than fourths.
  • When comparing to 1/2: if numerator is more than half of denominator, the fraction is more than 1/2.
