Tools and Resources to Know History

  • There are five major tools or sources to know history: Tadpatra (Palm Leaves), Bhojpatra (Birch Bark), Inscriptions (Stone and Metal), Copper Plates (Tamrapatra), and Coins.
  • TADPATRA: Manuscripts written on leaves of palm trees. They contain texts in Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Tamil. Poems, dramas, stories, and epics were also written on Tadpatra.
  • BHOJPATRA: Manuscripts written on the thin inner bark of the birch tree found in the Himalayas. These are preserved in temples and monasteries.

  • The word 'INDIA' is derived from the word 'Indus'. In Sanskrit, the Indus river is called 'Sindhu'.
  • People of ancient Iran called the Indus river 'Hindos'. People of ancient Greece called it 'Indus'.
