Key Topics to Revise

1

Key Concepts: Variables, Expressions, and Equations

  • A variable is a letter (like x, y, m, n) that represents an unknown number whose value can change.
  • An expression is formed by performing operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) on a variable. Example: 4x + 5, 10y - 20.
  • An equation is a statement that says two expressions are EQUAL. It always has an '=' sign.
2

Setting Up Equations from Statements

  • To set up an equation: (1) Identify the unknown and give it a variable name. (2) Translate the words into mathematical operations. (3) Write the equation using '='.
  • Key phrases and their mathematical meaning: 'sum of' → +, 'subtracted from' or 'less than' → -, 'times' or 'multiplied by' → ×, 'divided by' → ÷, 'is' or 'gives' or 'gets you' → =.
  • One-fourth of x means x/4; three times x means 3x; 5 more than x means x + 5.
3

Solving Equations: The Balancing Method

  • An equation is like a weighing balance — both sides must always remain equal.
  • The Golden Rule: Whatever mathematical operation you perform on one side, you MUST perform the SAME operation on the OTHER side.
  • You can: (1) Add the same number to both sides, (2) Subtract the same number from both sides, (3) Multiply both sides by the same number, (4) Divide both sides by the same non-zero number.
4

Transposing: The Shortcut Method

  • Transposing means moving a term from one side of the equation to the other side.
  • When a term is transposed, its sign CHANGES: + becomes - and - becomes +.
  • Transposing +a from LHS to RHS: LHS = ... + a → RHS = ... - a (subtract a from RHS).
