Properties of Addition and Subtraction of Integers

  • The sum of any two integers is always an integer (Closure under Addition).
  • The difference of any two integers is always an integer (Closure under Subtraction).
  • Integers can be added in any order and the result remains the same (Commutative Property of Addition): a + b = b + a.

Multiplication of Integers

  • Positive × Positive = Positive. Example: 4 × 5 = 20.
  • Positive × Negative = Negative. Example: 3 × (–5) = –15.
  • Negative × Positive = Negative. Example: (–4) × 7 = –28.

  • Integers are closed under multiplication: a × b is always an integer.
  • Multiplication is commutative for integers: a × b = b × a.
