Topics in Heat

1

Hot and Cold – Sense of Touch vs Temperature

  • Our sense of touch is NOT always a reliable guide to judge how hot or cold an object is.
  • Activity 3.1 shows that the same water in container C feels hot to the left hand (which was in cold water) and cold to the right hand (which was in hot water).
  • This proves that our sense of touch can deceive us.
2

Measuring Temperature – Clinical and Laboratory Thermometers

  • A clinical thermometer is used to measure body temperature. Its range is 35°C to 42°C.
  • The normal human body temperature is 37°C.
  • A laboratory thermometer is used to measure the temperature of other objects. Its range is generally -10°C to 110°C.
3

Transfer of Heat – Conduction

  • Conduction is the process of heat transfer through a solid material from the hotter end to the colder end.
  • The heat is passed from one particle to the next without the particles moving themselves.
  • In Activity 3.6, wax pieces on a metal rod fall one by one starting from the end nearest to the flame — proving heat moves by conduction.
4

Transfer of Heat – Convection

  • Convection is the process of heat transfer in liquids and gases through the actual movement of the heated particles.
  • When a liquid or gas is heated, it becomes lighter (less dense) and rises up. The cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place.
  • This creates a circular current called a convection current.
