States of North India — Key Dynasties

  • After the decline of the Gurjar Pratihaar Kingdom, several Rajput states rose in North India.
  • Garhwal Kingdom: Founded by Chandradev with capitals at Kannauj and Kashi. Great ruler Govindchandra prevented the invasion of Ghazni.
  • Chandel Dynasty: Ruled Bundelkhand (later called Jejakabhukti). Famous rulers: Yashovarman, Kirtivarman. Important cities: Khajuraho, Kalinjar, Mahoba. Khajuraho is famous for its magnificent temples.

Gujarat's Rajput Dynasties — Chavda, Solanki, and Vaghela

  • Chavda Dynasty: Vanraj Chavda founded Anhilwad Patan on the banks of river Saraswati in 756 A.D. He named the town after his childhood friend Anhil Bharwad.
  • Solanki (Chalukya) Dynasty: Ruled Gujarat after Chavda. Important rulers: Mulraj, Bhimdev-I, Siddhraj Jaysinh, Kumarpal, Bhimdev-II. Their rule is considered the Golden Age of Rajput regime in Gujarat
  • Rani Udaymati (wife of Bhimdev-I) built the world-famous stepwell 'Rani-ki-Vav' in Patan — declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

States of South India — Key Dynasties

  • Southern states = states south of river Narmada.
  • Chalukya Dynasty of Vatapi (Badami): Founded by Pulkeshi-I in 540 A.D. with capital at Vatapi. Important rulers: Kirtiverman, Pulkeshi-I, Pulkeshi-II.
  • Branches of Chalukya: (1) Vengi Chalukyas — founded by Vishnuvardhan between Krishna and Godavari rivers, capital Vengi. (2) Chalukyas of Kalyani.
