Agricultural Practices and Types of Crops
- Agriculture began around 10,000 B.C.E. when nomadic people settled down and started cultivating land.
- A crop is defined as plants of the same kind cultivated at one place on a large scale.
- Crops are classified into two main types based on the season they grow in India.
Basic Practices of Crop Production - Overview
- There are 7 main agricultural practices that a farmer must follow for successful crop production.
- These are: (1) Preparation of soil, (2) Sowing, (3) Adding manure and fertilisers, (4) Irrigation, (5) Protecting from weeds, (6) Harvesting, (7) Storage.
- Each step is important and skipping any step can reduce the quality and quantity of the crop.
Preparation of Soil and Agricultural Implements
- Preparation of soil is the FIRST step in crop production.
- The soil must be turned and loosened so roots can penetrate deep and breathe easily.
- Loose soil also helps earthworms and microbes to survive, which further improves soil quality.
Sowing of Seeds
- Sowing means placing seeds in the soil at the correct depth and spacing.
- Before sowing, good quality, clean, healthy seeds of a good variety must be selected.
- SEED SELECTION TEST: Put seeds in water — damaged/hollow seeds FLOAT, healthy seeds SINK.
