Why Do We Need Two References? — The Basic Idea
- To locate a point on a NUMBER LINE, one number (distance from origin) is enough.
- To locate a point on a PLANE (flat surface), we need TWO numbers — one for each direction.
- Example: To find a friend's house, knowing only the street name is NOT enough. You also need the house number. Similarly, a point in a plane needs TWO coordinates.
The Cartesian Plane — Axes, Origin, and Quadrants
- Two number lines are placed PERPENDICULAR to each other on a plane.
- The HORIZONTAL number line is called the X-AXIS (also written as X'OX).
- The VERTICAL number line is called the Y-AXIS (also written as Y'OY).
Coordinates of a Point — Abscissa and Ordinate
- Every point in the Cartesian plane has an ADDRESS called its COORDINATES, written as (x, y).
- The X-COORDINATE (also called ABSCISSA) of a point = its perpendicular distance from the Y-axis, measured along the X-axis.
- The Y-COORDINATE (also called ORDINATE) of a point = its perpendicular distance from the X-axis, measured along the Y-axis.
Signs of Coordinates in Each Quadrant
- The sign (+ or -) of each coordinate depends on which QUADRANT the point lies in.
- QUADRANT I (top-right): Both x and y are POSITIVE → (+, +)
- QUADRANT II (top-left): x is NEGATIVE, y is POSITIVE → (-, +)
