Describing Motion
- Motion is relative - an object may appear moving to one observer and stationary to another
- Reference point (origin) is essential to describe the position of any object
- Distance is the total path length covered by an object (scalar quantity)

Types of Motion
- Uniform motion: Object covers equal distances in equal time intervals
- Non-uniform motion: Object covers unequal distances in equal time intervals
- Most real-life motions are non-uniform

Speed and Velocity
- Speed is rate of motion - distance covered per unit time
- Speed is a scalar quantity (only magnitude)
- Velocity includes both speed and direction (vector quantity)

Acceleration
- Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
- Acceleration occurs when velocity changes (speed or direction or both)
- Positive acceleration: velocity increases or acceleration in direction of motion
