Introduction to Tissues
- A tissue is a group of cells similar in structure and/or work together to achieve a particular function
- Multicellular organisms show division of labour - different groups of cells perform different functions
- Specialised cells grouped together form tissues for maximum efficiency

Differences Between Plant and Animal Tissues
- Plants are stationary, animals move - this affects their tissue structure
- Plants have more supportive tissue (often dead cells) to remain upright
- Animals have more living tissues as they need more energy for movement

Plant Tissues - Meristematic Tissue
- Located only at specific growing points in plants
- Cells are very active with dense cytoplasm, thin cell walls, prominent nuclei
- Lack vacuoles (to allow space for rapid division)

Plant Tissues - Simple Permanent Tissue
- Formed from meristematic tissue after differentiation
- Three main types: Parenchyma, Collenchyma, and Sclerenchyma
- Parenchyma: most common, thin-walled living cells, stores food
