  • Examples of homogeneous mixtures: salt dissolved in water, sugar dissolved in water, copper sulphate solution.
  • A homogeneous mixture can have variable composition (e.g., less or more salt in water — both are homogeneous).

Solutions — Properties and Concentration

  • A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
  • The solvent is the component present in larger amount that does the dissolving.
  • The solute is the component present in smaller amount that gets dissolved.

Suspensions and Colloids — Properties and Tyndall Effect

  • A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture where solute particles do NOT dissolve — they remain suspended.
  • Suspension particle size is greater than 1000 nm — visible to naked eyes.
  • Suspension is UNSTABLE — particles settle down on standing.
