Principle of Division of Powers
- Government functions are divided among three organs to prevent misuse of power
- Legislature makes laws, Executive implements laws, Judiciary interprets and enforces laws
- Each organ has checks and balances over the others

Legislature - Parliament at Centre
- Parliament consists of President, Lok Sabha (Lower House), and Rajya Sabha (Upper House)
- Lok Sabha: 545 members (543 elected + 2 nominated Anglo-Indians), 5-year term
- Rajya Sabha: 250 members (238 elected + 12 nominated), 6-year term with 1/3rd retiring every 2 years

Law-Making Process
- Three types of bills: Ordinary Bill, Money Bill, Constitutional Amendment Bill
- Ordinary Bill: Can be introduced in either house, goes through three readings
- Money Bill: Introduced only in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha has limited powers (14 days)

State Legislature
- Legislative Assembly (Lower House) in all states
- Legislative Council (Upper House) only in some states (Bihar, UP, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu)
- Gujarat has only Legislative Assembly (182 members)
