1. Meaning and Use of Prepositions

  • A preposition connects a noun or pronoun with another word.
  • The noun or pronoun used with a preposition is called the object of the preposition.
  • A preposition can have more than one object.

  • On is used for specific days and dates.
  • In is used with parts of the day and longer periods such as months, years, decades, and seasons.
  • At is used with a specific point in time and mealtimes.

  • In is used with countries, cities, large towns, large spaces, and enclosed spaces.
  • At is used for a small place, an address, a specific point, a place for a specific activity, and spaces not enclosed.
  • On is used for a surface, borders, streets, islands, and some public transport.

4. Position of Prepositions and Special Uses

  • Prepositions are usually placed before the noun or pronoun.
  • A preposition may come at the end when the object is a relative pronoun.
  • The preposition can come before the object when the relative pronoun is who, whom, or which.
