- There are two ways of reporting what somebody says: direct speech and indirect speech.
- Direct speech uses the exact words of the speaker.
- Indirect speech reports the meaning without quotation marks.
Tense Change Rules
- If the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, the tense of the reported speech does not change.
- If the reporting verb is in the past tense, tense changes usually take place.
- simple present changes to simple past.
Time and Place Word Changes
- today changes to that day.
- tomorrow changes to the next day or the following day.
- here changes to there.
Reporting Verbs and Sentence Types
- In interrogative sentences, said can change to asked or enquired.
- In yes/no questions, the reporting verb is followed by if or whether.
- In wh-questions, the question word stays in the sentence.
