  • There are two ways of reporting what somebody says: direct speech and indirect speech.
  • Direct speech uses the exact words of the speaker.
  • Indirect speech reports the meaning without quotation marks.

Tense Change Rules

  • If the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, the tense of the reported speech does not change.
  • If the reporting verb is in the past tense, tense changes usually take place.
  • simple present changes to simple past.

Time and Place Word Changes

  • today changes to that day.
  • tomorrow changes to the next day or the following day.
  • here changes to there.

Reporting Verbs and Sentence Types

  • In interrogative sentences, said can change to asked or enquired.
  • In yes/no questions, the reporting verb is followed by if or whether.
  • In wh-questions, the question word stays in the sentence.
