  • There are two ways of reporting what somebody says: direct speech and indirect speech.
  • Direct speech uses the exact words of the speaker.
  • Indirect speech reports the meaning without quotation marks.

  • If the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, the tense of the reported speech does not change.
  • If the reporting verb is in the past tense, tense changes usually take place.
