1. Biodiversity at Risk Due to Human Actions
- Loss of habitat is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity.
- Habitat loss is caused mainly by agricultural activities, mining, human settlements and industry.
- Habitat loss and degradation has affected 89% of all threatened birds, 83% of mammals and 91% of all threatened plants assessed globally.
2. Reasons for Concern and Conservation of Wildlife
- Wildlife should be conserved for ecological, economic and aesthetic reasons.
- Ecological reasons: wildlife maintains biodiversity and food chains, and helps ecological balance.
- Destroying forests affects herbivores first, then carnivores, and disturbs the food web.
3. In-situ and Ex-situ Conservation
- In-situ conservation means conservation of species in their natural habitats.
- It includes national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves.
- India has the second largest base of biodiversity in the world with 441 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 80 National Parks in this context.
4. Important Protected Areas in India
- Corbett National Park is India's first national park and was set up in 1936.
- Corbett National Park is located in Nainital and Pauri Garhwal in Uttaranchal and includes Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Jim Corbett helped and recommended the setting up of Corbett National Park.
