Topics in Managing Soil and Land

1

Soil, Soil Erosion, and Why Conservation Matters

  • Soil supports plant growth and is the entry point for most materials into food webs.
  • Soil is produced by the weathering of rocks and develops naturally over time through the action of plants, animals, and weathering.
  • Soil erosion is the relocation of soil through the movement of water or wind.
2

Erosion Control Techniques

  • Terracing is used in hilly areas. A hill slope is cut into a number of terraces with horizontal tops and steep slopes at the back and front.
  • Contour ploughing is done along the contour of the land on slopes to prevent rainwater from washing away soil.
  • Dry farming is practised in arid areas without irrigation or by using drought-resistant crops and moisture-saving methods.
3

Soil Conservation Techniques and Cropping Systems

  • Land-use management means choosing suitable land for a particular purpose.
  • Deep, fertile, well-drained land is suited to intense cropping, while steep, shallow, stony land may be suitable for wildlife or recreation.
  • Land use can broadly be classified into crop land, pasture land, wood land, wildlife and recreation land.
4

Land Reforms and Integrated Rural Development

  • Before independence, agricultural land was held by intermediaries under the zamindari, mahalwari and ryotwari systems.
  • Land reforms aim to redistribute land ownership in favour of cultivating classes and improve farm size, security of tenure, and regulation of rents.
  • The objectives of land reforms include building an efficient agrarian economy, removing social inequality, redistributing land, and developing cooperative farming.
