Meaning of Economy and Basic Economic Activities
- Economy means a system of production, consumption, distribution, investment and exchange of goods and services.
- An economy includes all production units such as farms, factories, workshops, shops, railways, banks, insurance companies, schools, colleges and hospitals.
- Economic life of a community is the total economic activity of the people.
Capitalistic Economy
- Capitalistic economy is also called free market economy and laissez-faire economy.
- Means of production such as land and capital are privately owned.
- Economic activities are guided by self-interest and profit motive.
Socialist Economy
- Socialism is an economic system in which means of production are owned and managed by the whole community or state.
- The state controls and manages production according to a general economic plan.
- The Soviet Union became the first socialistic state in the world in 1917.
Mixed Economy
- Mixed economy combines the best features of capitalism and socialism.
- It has both public sector and private sector.
- The concept of mixed economy was propounded by J.M. Keynes during the world depression of the thirties.
