Innate: non-specific, no memory — physical (skin, mucus), physiological (HCl, lysozyme), cellular (NK cells, phagocytes), cytokine (interferons)

Acquired Active Natural: after natural infection; long-lasting; memory cells formed

Acquired Active Artificial: vaccination; long-lasting; memory cells formed (Edward Jenner, 1796)

Acquired Passive Natural: colostrum IgA from mother → neonate; short-lived; no memory

Acquired Passive Artificial: anti-serum/antitoxin injection (anti-tetanus); immediate but short-lived

Uncontrolled division due to loss of contact inhibition

Benign: encapsulated, localised, does NOT metastasise

Malignant: invasive, METASTASISES via blood/lymph

Types: Carcinoma (epithelial) | Sarcoma (connective) | Lymphoma (lymphoid) | Leukaemia (blood)

Carcinogens: tobacco (lung cancer), UV radiation (skin cancer), asbestos, HPV/EBV (viruses)
