2. Rolle's Theorem: Conditions, Checks, and Standard Examples

  • Rolle's theorem needs three conditions: continuity on [a,b], differentiability on (a,b), and f(a)=f(b).
  • Geometrically, it guarantees at least one point where the tangent is parallel to the x-axis.
  • There may be more than one point with horizontal tangent.

3. Worked Examples for Rolle's Theorem

  • f(x)=tan x on [0,π] is not applicable because the function is not continuous at x=π/2.
  • f(x)=√(5-x) on [-3,6] is not applicable because the function is not continuous on the entire interval.
  • f(x)=⌊x⌋ on [5,9] is not applicable because it is discontinuous at integer points such as x=6.

4. Role of Rolle's Theorem in Algebraic Problems

  • Rolle's theorem can be used to prove relationships between coefficients and roots of polynomials.
  • If a polynomial has equal values at the endpoints, then a root of the derivative lies inside the interval.
  • For f(x)=x^3+ax^2+bx on [1,2] with c=4/3, the values are a=-5 and b=8.
