  • A matrix is an ordered rectangular array of numbers or functions.
  • The elements of a matrix are written inside square brackets or parentheses.
  • The order of a matrix is written as m × n, where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns.

2. Equality, addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication

  • Two matrices are equal only if they have the same order and corresponding elements are equal.
  • Matrix addition is defined only for matrices of the same order.
  • Matrix subtraction is also defined only for matrices of the same order.

  • Matrix multiplication is defined only when the number of columns of the first matrix equals the number of rows of the second matrix.
  • If A is of order m × n and B is of order n × p, then AB is of order m × p.
